This volume concludes the short introduction to Marxism which was begun in From Marx to Mao Tse-tung and continued in Capitalism and After. Taken together, the three volumes cover the political, historical and ideological aspects of the subject. Starting from Marx’s analysis of the labour-process, Lenin’s theory of reflection, and Mao Tse-tung’s theory of perceptual and rational knowledge, I endeavour to show that science and art are two interdependent forms of the organisation of social energy, both rooted in the labour-process. The argument ranges over a number of interrelated problems in linguistics, psychology, anthropology, musicology and literary criticism, not to mention philosophy and history.
